Surprisingly similar when they're side by side

OK, the GT-Four is in a different game on performance (but isn’t everything). It’s got an extra 40hp, two more driven wheels, and a bucketload more torque, though against that the GT86 is about 100kg lighter.

But dimensionally and proportions-wise they’re remarkably close: the Toyobaru’s about 6" shorter but width, height, and wheelbase are with 1" or so, and there are a lot of shared styling cues.

Guess it’s not just a descendent of the AE86.

I don’t know why, but it really surprises me alot that the 86 is shorter than that gen Celica.

I always saw the family resemblance between these two;

Me too. Till I saw them side by side (and checked on wiki) I’d have said the modern car was a lot bigger overall, like most modern vehicles. The gen 5-6 Celicas have always seemed small and delicate to me.

I’m even more surprised the GT86 is lighter. 4WD systems weigh, but so do modern crash structures.

I can’t wait until that generation of GT-Four is import legal to the stays. and when I say I can’t wait I mean I can’t wait to dream about buying one while driving the sensible sedan while taking my kid to hockey practice

The Celicas were kind of porky. Even the normal GTs of that gen were 2,600 lbs, and that’s the standard FWD model.

I feel like alot of 90s Toyotas are surprisingly heavy because they started using thicker cheet metal since the 80s ones rusted so badly. I guarantee that the Celica has more interior room than the 86 though. My MR2 has more usable interior room than my 86 did.

The 86's interior space would would be a lot more useable if they didn’t have that damn fool no-memory seatback release. Having to readjust your seat every time is a real disincentive to throwing shit onto the back seats.

I wonder is anyone makes a rally bumper for the FRS/gt86. It stick one hangs too, low and two far forward to really look like a rally car.

Shared styling cues? I think you’re seen heritage where there is none. Otherwise known as Porsche syndrome .

One has gaping fish eyes without fogs, a high center grill and a higher hood intake including some bulging around the hood for style, a rounded front, a huge wing (which I suspect is aftermarket), a narrow rear with a flat waistline. The other has none of that, a curved up waistline with wide hips, sculpted roof, different pillars, flat hood, nose coming to a point rather than being round, mirrors on the door itself rather than in the window corner.

They’re almost opposites. All the places the Celica has flair and style, the 86 is lacking. And vice versa. Even their shades of white are different as can be.

Aside from both being the same sort of mild coupe, they’re different in every single way.

It runs deeper too. One is AWD, turbocharged, the other is RWD, infamously underpowered. The 86 also looks a lot fatter, which is usual for modern cars. It does weigh less, but it’s got less hardware in it too.

I refuse to move my drivers seat. People can get to the back from the passenger side.

ya idk why they claim this car is a success to the ae86, it really is more like an 80s celica.

They are... technically. There’s the 25-year import law, but there’s also a 21-year emissions statute. Since the only truly unique thing about the ST205 is the engine, it’s old enough for it to be emissions exempt. As for the 25-year import law, you can have it registered as an ordinary 6th gen Celica since it has the exact same frame as the ordinary car.
